The Roper St. Francis Hand & Upper Extremity Center has united many of the area’s leading experts in orthopedics to create the area’s foremost center for hand and arm care. Our Center offers comprehensive services using superior equipment, facilities and nurses.

Our orthopedic hand surgeons have advanced training in the treatment of hand and arm issues and injuries and  have completed the top hand fellowships in the world. Their knowledge and experience can help you regain range of motion and function.

Our Team

Our team is comprised of experts in all areas of hand and upper extremity care with more than 125 years of combined experience.

Christopher Brooker, MD, DMD
Dr. Christopher Brooker is a graduate of Wofford College and earned a doctorate in dental medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). After a year of academic research, he returned and earned his medical degree from MUSC, followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery at Greenville Hospital System. Dr. Brooker completed additional training in hand and microvascular surgery at the University of California Medical Center in San Diego, and is board certified in hand surgery.

   

John Ernst, MD
Dr. John Ernst specializes in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of all hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder disorders and is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. He completed his medical degree and residency in orthopaedics at the University of Rochester and a fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at Indiana University / St. Vincent Hospital.

   

John MacIlwaine, MD
Dr. John MacIlwaine is board certified in orthopaedic surgery with fellowship training in hand surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA), and also received his medical degree from UVA. He completed his residency at Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, and fellowship training at Indiana School of Medicine and UVA. Dr. MacIlwaine specializes in hand and wrist surgery as well as soft tissue surgery of the forearm.

   

John McFadden, MD
Dr. John McFadden is a graduate of the University of Richmond, earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School then completed his internship and residency at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He did further fellowship training at California Pacific Medical Center Hand and Microsurgery Group. He is board certified in both hand and plastic surgery, and applies his plastic surgery expertise to his microsurgery practice.

   

Gerald Shealy, MD
Dr. Gerald Shealy did his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina. He earned his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He did his internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and completed a fellowship at Hand Surgery University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky. He is board certified in hand and microsurgery.
