Minimally invasive surgery

Roper St. Francis Healthcare is a regional leader in minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is performed through small incisions or natural body openings to minimize trauma. The benefits of minimally invasive surgery are so great that in many cases it has become the standard procedure, replacing traditional open surgery.

Types of minimally invasive procedures:

  • Robotic surgery
  • Laparoscopy
  • Laser
  • Endovascular advances
  • Angioplasty
  • Stents and grafts
  • Heart valve surgery

Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery, a minimally invasive technique, allows the surgeon to operate through a few small incisions and provides a 3-D high definition view. The tiny instruments that are used can bend and rotate well beyond the capabilities of the human wrist. The benefits of robotic surgery for you are a smaller scar, less pain, shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare was the first in the Lowcountry to offer this technology. Roper Hospital led the way, becoming an internationally recognized colorectal robotic epicenter. The program met a rigorous list of criteria and is a teaching center for this advanced colon cancer fighting tool.

Our healthcare system has expanded upon the excellence of Roper Hospital's program. Now all four of our hospitals offer robotic surgery in the Charleston, SC area, treating a wide range of conditions. Our surgeons enter the operating room with the depth of skill and knowledge that comes from having performed thousands of robotic surgeries.
