A Radiologist is different from other doctors because they diagnose and treat diseases by obtaining and interpreting medical images. The images are obtained by using many types of imaging technologies such as X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A radiologist shares their findings with the referring physician and often makes recommendations further examinations or treatments. Radiologists also treat some diseases by means of minimally invasive, image-guided surgery (interventional radiology).
Like other doctors, the radiologist must have graduated from an accredited medical school, passed a licensing examination, and completed at least four years of residency. All the radiologists practicing at Roper St. Francis Healthcare are board certified by the American Board of Radiology.
