Diagnosing colorectal cancer
When colon and rectal cancers are found early, there is almost a 90 percent chance for cure. Screening, early detection and diagnosis are key to the best patient outcomes. Roper St. Francis Healthcare uses a number of tests to screen for or diagnose colorectal cancer, including:
- Colonoscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Imaging, including CT colonography, MRI, and double contrast barium enema (DCBE)
- Fecal tests, including occult blood test (FOBT), immunohistochemical test (FIT), DNA test (Cologuard)
- Digital rectal exam
Colorectal cancer treatment
The Roper St. Francis Healthcare team brings international expertise to the effective treatment for colorectal cancer. Surgery is often the primary treatment, and chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be used in conjunction with surgery. Roper St. Francis is a national leader in robotic surgery specifically for colorectal cancer, as well as a teaching center for this advanced colon cancer fighting technology.
Primary colorectal cancer treatment options include:
- Polypectomy
- Resection of part of the colon or rectum, most often without the requirement for a permanent colostomy
- Radiation therapy (rectal cancers)
- Adjuvant chemotherapy
- Chemoprophylaxis to prevent future colorectal cancers
Treatment options for advanced or recurrent colorectal cancer include:
- Chemotherapy
- Biological therapy
- Surgical resection
- Interventional techniques including radiofrequency ablation, chemo or radioembolization, or TrueBeam®
