Wednesday, December 6, 2023 - Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital named Leapfrog 'Top Hospital'

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital has been recognized as a Top General Hospital by The Leapfrog Group - the only facility in the Charleston region and one of only two in South Carolina to receive the honor for achievements in patient safety and quality.

This is the third consecutive year that the facility has achieved the Top Hospital recognition.

“The teammates at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital truly live the Roper St. Francis Healthcare mission of healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence,” said Matt Desmond, regional president of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. “It’s no surprise that their dedication to our patients and their commitment to safety have resulted in this Top General Hospital recognition from The Leapfrog Group. We thank each and every teammate for their hard work and the community for continuing to trust us with their care.”

The Leapfrog honor is one of the most competitive awards for American hospitals. The Top Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization widely regarded as the toughest standard-setter for healthcare safety and quality.

The award comes on the heels of a prestigious distinction for all four Roper St. Francis Healthcare acute care facilities in November, when each hospital earned an "A" safety grade from Leapfrog.

Marian Savage, vice president for quality and patient experience at Roper St. Francis Healthcare, accepted the Top Hospital award on Wednesday, Dec. 5, during Leapfrog's annual meeting and awards dinner in Washington, D.C.

“The Top Hospital award demonstrates our commitment as an organization to provide standardized, best-in-class care,” Savage said. “We’re proud to be state and national leaders for our quality, and we’re grateful to our teammates who made this award possible through their exceptional patient care and focus on safety.”

This year, 132 hospitals nationwide earned the Top Hospital Award, including 34 Top General Hospitals, eight Top Children’s Hospitals, 15 Top Rural Hospitals and 75 Top Teaching Hospitals.

The Top Hospital award means Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital demonstrates the highest performance in the nation for quality and patient safety, including infection rates, prevention of medication errors and surgical safety.

The recognition for Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital reflects a system-wide focus on quality and protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. Last month's announcement from Leapfrog marked the second straight “A” Hospital Safety Grades for the facility and the system's three other hospitals: Roper Hospital, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital.

About The Leapfrog Group

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps for patient safety. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey and Leapfrog Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Survey collect and transparently report hospital and ASC performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
