Genetic Counseling
With the exception of age, the greatest risk factor for breast cancer is a family history of the disease. About 5-10 percent of women with breast cancer have a family history of one or two relatives with the disease. Roper St. Francis Cancer Center offers a genetic counseling program for those whose family history suggests they may be carriers of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, two genes strongly associated with the development of breast cancer.

Palliative Care
Palliative care is a specialized care for people who are living with an advanced disease. The goal of palliative care is to provide the best quality of life for patients by ensuring their comfort and dignity. Palliative care focuses on the whole person and includes expert medical care, symptom and pain management. It also includes emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient and their familyıs needs and wishes. Quality of life is an important aspect of palliative care, which is why the care team works with you, your attending doctor and family to achieve your goals.

Prevention and Screening
Because prevention and early detection is the single best way to decrease the number of cancer deaths, Roper St. Francis Cancer Center provides numerous free screenings and educational events to the community each year.

  • Annual prostate cancer screenings include educational information, rectal examinations by doctors and blood (PSA) tests offered at no charge.
  • Breast screenings include a professional breast exam, a mammogram referral if recommended and instruction on breast self-exam.
  • Annual skin cancer screenings are performed by Roper St. Francis Healthcare surgeons, dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons.

Cancer Registry

The Cancer Registry at the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center began keeping track of information on cancer patients January 1, 1992. The Cancer Registry is a data system for the collection, management, and analysis of this data for patients with a malignancy or cancer. Data is compiled and shared with county, state, and national agencies interested in the study of cancer and authorized to use the data by the Cancer Committee. In fact, most states, including South Carolina, have laws that require hospitals and physicians to report cancer cases to their State Cancer Registry. Strict confidentiality is maintained at all times. The Cancer Registry submits data annually to the National Cancer Data Base and the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry.

SERVICES OFFERED:

Cancer Registry data is used for a variety of purposes, which include education, lifetime patient follow up, and research:

  • Statistical reports of registry data allow cancer specialists to evaluate the success of specific cancer treatments
  • An automatic reminder to physicians and patients to schedule regular physical exams, assuring continued medical supervision
  • A valuable source for researchers interested in the cause, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer
  • Patient follow-up; reporting of annual patient follow-up is required by state and national accrediting agencies
  • Annual patient follow-up has provided important findings in helping present and future cancer patients
