If poisoning occurs, action must be taken quickly. If there is a telephone nearby, call a physician, hospital emergency room, or poison control information center (link to center site). If there is another person present, one should telephone and one should watch the victim closely in order to give artificial respiration if necessary. The following information should be given.

  • Keep the poison center phone number near your telephone. Place a sticker on each phone or enter into speed dial so it is always available.
  • Keep a bottle of Syrup of Ipecac on hand. Never give ipecac unless instructed to do so by the poison center or your physician.
  • Check the condition of the victim.
    - If unconscious, having breathing problems, severe chest pains or other serious symptoms, call 911 immediately.
    - If there are no life-threatening symptoms; determine, if possible, the substance involved, note any symptoms present, then call the poison center.
  • DO NOT give first aid beyond life support unless a phone is not readily available - You will be told the proper treatment procedures.
  • When a product is involved, bring the container to the phone and call the Palmetto Poison Center. 800-922-1117 or 803-777-1117.
  • Tell the poison specialist the exact name of the substance, the amount involved, the age and weight of the victim and any problems felt or seen. The poison center will determine the potential danger and recommend appropriate action. If the poison is unknown, give the general nature of the substance.
  • State whether any emergency treatment has been given.
  • State whether or not the victim has vomited. If the victim vomits, save a sample for analysis.
  • Give your location and the telephone number at which you can be reached.
  • When medical attention is necessary, the poison center can call the clinic or emergency room and give important treatment information to prepare for the patient's arrival .
