Our Projects

Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital

Over the last 15 years, the pace of change in Mount Pleasant has rapidly accelerated. Energized by 100 percent population growth, the East of the Cooper area has become one of the fastest growing in the Southeast. Mount Pleasant is, in fact, forecast to become the fourth largest municipality in South Carolina by 2010.  Now, as the new Mount Pleasant takes its place on center stage, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is poised to build a non-profit hospital worthy of one of South Carolina’s most vibrant communities.

With a campus that will reflect the unique spirit of Mount Pleasant, the new Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital will be staffed by the same outstanding physicians who have established the high quality reputation that has characterized our hospitals for generations. Located right at the heart of the “Mount Pleasant of tomorrow” and with easy accessibility for the Mount Pleasant, Daniel and Sullivan’s islands, Isle of Palms, Awendaw and Georgetown of today, the new full-service hospital will include:

Emergency Care
  • Twelve treatment spaces including resuscitation, obstetrics, gynecology and psychiatry
  • A helipad

Imaging
Radiology, Fluoroscopy, Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Cardiology/Ambulatory Diagnostics
Echocardiography including stress testing, Electroencephalography, Pulmonary, and Nuclear Medicine

Medical/Surgical Units

Two with 32 private rooms each

Surgery
Four operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, eight post-anesthesia care units, 25 pre- and post-operative care beds and shell spaces for two additional operating rooms

Intensive Care Unit
Ten private rooms and private ICU waiting area

Mother and Baby Unit
Four-five labor delivery rooms, two C-section rooms, 10-11 post partum rooms, twelve bassinets, dedicated first floor entrance

Beautiful Outdoor Spaces for Healing
Including 38 acres of protected woodlands and wetlands and seven acres of gardens and landscaped grounds

All services will be located in a carefully designed 220,000 square foot facility whose every component will help create a healing environment. From the soothing colors and the configuration of the patient rooms to the fully staffed Emergency Department, every aspect of the new hospital will help minimize patient and family stress while ensuring that the healthcare professionals have the very best equipment readily available.

Even the outside of the new hospital has been designed to serve the community, providing an ideal setting for patients, their families, and community residents to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

The Bon Secours St. Francis Outpatient Cancer Center

A new Outpatient Cancer Center, dedicated to treating cancer in a better way, is being planned for the Bon Secours St. Francis campus.  Unified treatment, convenience for patients, the best-trained physicians, and access to up-to-the-minute technology will combine to allow earlier detection and quicker, less invasive elimination of tumors.  The Center’s unique design will offer better access to specialists, a shop catering to the unique needs of cancer patients, a resource library, and more comfortable and patient-centric spaces.

Advanced Technology

The new Cancer Center’s services will be enhanced with technology that will be among the region’s most advanced.

  • Linear Accelerator – This high-tech radiation device makes it possible to target tumors very precisely, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. As a result, recovery time is reduced and tumors can often be reduced or eliminated without surgery.
  • CT-Simulator – The CT simulator is one of the latest advances in Radiation Oncology. This--especially in combination with our existing PET - CT scanner--makes it possible to localize and define in three dimensions the patient's tumor and the normal tissue surrounding it. That localization allows the Radiation Oncologist to design a treatment plan unique to each patient’s anatomy.
  • Outpatient Chemotherapy technology and equipment – At the new Center, patients receiving chemotherapy will be able to receive their treatment using the latest equipment, in a spacious, comfortable center that is easily accessible.
  • The Cancer Rehabilitation Center

Reflecting Bon Secours St. Francis Healthcare’s commitment to comprehensive, compassionate care, the new Cancer Center will also include its own innovative Rehabilitation Center. Once physical treatment is complete, the rehabilitation center will provide patients with services designed to ensure that treatment benefits are maximized. The new center will include a variety of alternative care modalities, follow-up education classes for patients and family members, and pain management treatment.

    Meditation Garden: “Whole Body” Healing

At Roper St. Healthcare, we understand that healing involves more than the body. The patient’s and family’s emotional needs must also be addressed. That awareness is guiding the creation of a beautiful new Meditation Garden on the Bon Secours St. Francis campus. Featuring a calming labyrinth pathway, an ancient aid to meditation and prayer, the garden’s spiral path will lead to a cascading foundation, and will include comfortable benches for periods of quiet reflection and prayer. Wheelchair accessible, this beautiful resource will allow visitors to regain the strength and composure that is a key to true healing.

    Roper Hospital

At Roper Hospital, our commitment to patient-centered treatment is nowhere more evident than in two of our most important programs: cancer care and cardiac care.  First, we make certain that the technology available in these programs is second to none.  We know that the outstanding specialists who work in these areas can be most effective when the level of technology matches their extraordinary skills. (Roper’s new CyberKnife® is a prime example of our commitment to providing our patients with the very best in technology.) Our concern for the welfare of our patients, however, extends far beyond providing the best in technology. At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, we want to ensure that every service we provide is as effective as possible.

Ease the Stresses of Cancer Care

Reflecting that genuine concern for the well being of our patients, Roper Hospital initiated the extremely well received Cancer Navigator program. This groundbreaking innovation provides cancer patients with person-to-person guidance that is unique to the Lowcountry. Available from diagnosis through treatment and rehabilitation, the nurse navigator ensures that each patient has one person who helps streamline access to the doctors and nurses who are providing the treatment, one person who can help address the myriad of concerns and questions.

Begun in 2003, this program has quickly grown to become one of our most important cancer support programs. Currently available to breast cancer patients, we are planning to extend it to prostate, lung, and colorectal patients as well. By adding four additional Nurse Navigators, we will serve literally hundreds of additional patients and families.

Match the Excellence of Our Physicians and Technology

At Roper St. Francis, we want to ensure that our cancer-care facilities are as accessible, convenient, and well designed as possible. With that goal in mind, we have developed plans to transform the cancer treatment area at Roper Hospital into a “hospital within a hospital.” Our new plan will create the most patient-friendly facility possible.

In the new design, many of the diagnosis and treatment areas will be conveniently located in one area:

  • Radiation Oncology will be more comfortable and accommodating.
  • A new outpatient infusion center will increase patient privacy and comfort.
  • A “support wing” will be developed, including easy access for patients and their families to the social worker, the dietician, and the chapel and meditation room. We will even provide temporary living quarters for families of patients receiving care.
  • The Second Half of Cardiac Care: Cardiac Rehabilitation

Today, Roper Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center is the most advanced facility of its kind in the state. Although our expertise in diagnosis and cardiac treatment are unmatched, they represent only the first part of the healing process. Lasting health is best restored when the cardiac patient actively participates in a program of cardiac rehabilitation.

Renovations of our existing facility would better accommodate the needs of more patients, provide a comprehensive “whole body” approach to the healing process, and extend the Roper Heart and Vascular experience from diagnosis to surgery and through a thorough rehabilitation.

    The new facility will include:

    • Updated cardiac equipment
    • State-of-the-art technologies for measuring and recording improvement
    • Expanded studio area for stretching, yoga, and tai chi
    • A demonstration kitchen for healthy diet cooking classes
    • Classroom space for stress management, social therapy, and other non-physical rehab techniques
    • Renovations including window and skylight installation to provide more natural light

Donor Restricted Gifts to Other Projects

While the projects listed above are the focus of many fundraising efforts at the Roper St. Francis Foundation, we happily work with our donors to ensure their generosity supports the programs and services about which they feel passionately.  Foundation staff is always available to discuss the wide variety of benefits Roper St. Francis Healthcare provides patients and the community, and ways in which donors can maximize their involvement in the Foundation through restricted gifts to areas of interest.

    Unrestricted Gifts to the Foundation

Donors are an integral component of the efficient and effective functioning of Roper St. Francis Healthcare.  One of the noticeable benefits our supporters provide is the power of unrestricted dollars, money the Foundation and the system can use at its discretion to accomplish the immediate needs of our patients, staff, facilities, and the larger community.  Simply indicate your desire to give “Where the Need is Greatest” next time you support Roper St. Francis Healthcare, and we will fund programs and services deserving of your philanthropic gift.
