Non-Invasive Diagnostic

Holter Monitor
Whats Next
Before:
- Call
Outpatient Registration to schedule your
holter monitor procedure, 402-5000. A
physician order is necessary.
- It
is important that you are on time for
your scheduled appointment. Unless instructed
to report directly to the department,
you will need to check in with the Outpatient
Admitting office on the first floor of
Roper Hospital. A volunteer will be available
to escort you to the Non-invasive Cardiology
Department for your procedure.
During:
- You
will be asked to remove your clothing
from the waist up and lie on an examination
table.
- Your
chest will be mildly abraded in five to
seven locations to help insure conductivity
throughout the test. It may also be necessary
to shave small patches of hair for accurate
electrode placement.
- Lead
wires with attached electrodes will be
placed at these abraded sites. The lead
wires are then connected to a small box
that will record your hearts electrical
activity for 24 hours. During this time,
you are asked to write down any heart-related
symptoms you think you are having on a
diary sheet provided to you.
- You
may not shower during this 24 hour period
but should continue to perform your normal
activities as much as possible.
After:
- At
the end of the 24 hours, you will need
to return the holter monitor to the Non-invasive
Cardiology Department.
- Resume
normal activities unless otherwise instructed
by your physician.
